Ingredients & Procedure:

4 cups all purpose flour, 1 T. baking powder,  3 T. sugar,  1 tsp. salt &  3/4 tsp. baking soda.

Mix together in a large bowl.  Cut in 6 T. butter or margarine until you get coarse crumbs.  Stir in

 1 1/2 cups raisins and 1 T. Caraway seeds.

In a medium sized bowl, beat two eggs slightly with a fork.  Remove 1 T. of this and reserve.

Stir in 1 1/2 cup buttermilk, mix well and then stir this mixture into the flour mixture and mix just

until the flour mixture is moistened.  The dough will be sticky.

Turn out on to a well floured surface and with floured hands, knead about ten strokes to

mix thoroughly.  Shape into a ball.  Place ball into a round pyrex baking dish or a square pyrex

baking dish.  Cut a 4" cross 1/4" deep in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.  Brush loaf with

reserved, beaten egg and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Remove, let cool, slice and enjoy with lots of good butter.
